Local Tourists: Perspective Gained on Mt. Ann By Colin Wiseman It’s easy to be complacent, especially at home. When you travel regularly, coming home means familiarity—from my house in Bellingham, Washington, that same drive up Highway 542 through moss-clad maple and thick evergreens to early morning reunions in the Mt Baker Ski Area lift line. Maybe a hike out the Arm if the sun shows. But what of those peaks in the distance? Those ones you always think about riding but don’t always touch, because it’s just so much easier to enjoy what you already know? What of a...

THE SPRING BRANCH ROAD
Not everyone wants to bike hundreds of miles to then spend a week split boarding in a little known, remote mountain range, all in sub-par conditions. But deep down we’re all somewhat adventurous. Self sufficiency, turning dreams into reality, pushing past comfort zones, these can become a lure for many - myself included. After hearing whispers of a wilderness that rarely sees any winter visitors, Tailer Gray formulated an ambitious response: a ‘bike to board’ escapade into a desolate, Northern California range. Featuring Tailer Gray & Amanda Hankison Presented By Coal Headwear and The North Face Supported By Spark...

Last May, Naima Antolin spearheaded a trip to Riksgränsen, Sweden along with Darrah Reid-McLean and Phil Hansen. Riksgränsen is an iconic destination full of snowboard history, yet it is so far removed from the North American snowboard scene that a lot of riders here haven’t even heard of it. Filmer Kevin Nolan caught up with Naima to get the inside scoop on the trip of a lifetime. Kevin Nolan OK, so let's start from the beginning. How did you get the idea in your head for this trip? How did it come about originally? Naima Antolin: OK, so if...

CANADREAM
What happens when you let Phil Hansen plan an RV trip from Vancouver to Banff with a crew of 15ish idiots in tow? Well, this videos happened. Along with a whole bunch of other shenanigans that everyone in the video is probably happy we left on the cutting room floor. Coal and Mervin teamed up Beauty and the Beast style for a Spring road trip that left us all surprised weren’t banned from Canada. For an alternative (Beast) perspective of the trip, check out "HOLY MOLY" from the mind of Phil Hansen here.

Searching For the Soul of Snowboa...
Lost Trail Powder Mountain: a place that exists outside the normal realm of time and space. A place where you can camp in the parking lot with all your friends, where the lifties bump ancient diesel powered double chairs in one piece Carhartt suits and ask you how your days going. Is this where the soul of snowboarding lives? We journeyed far into the mountains of Montana to find out.

Stepping Out with Danny Kern
“Stepping out” is a piece of jargon to describe one of eight mindsets for guides and avalanche nerds. When conditions improve they build confidence that the snow is stable and it is appropriate to step out into bigger, steeper, more technical terrain. This spring I saw the Rat Race champ stepping out from behind the camera. Gaining confidence with every uphill bushwhack in a downpour, Danny Kern is setting himself up for a life well led by saying yes.

Perfectly Imperfect
Surfing in the Pacific Northwest is mostly an exercise in patience and humility, in managing one’s expectations. Exposure to Pacific storms and open ocean swell from the Bering Sea to the South Pacific, combined with strong tidal swings and plenty of wind, makes for very fickle conditions. If you live in one of the cities, even if you’ve been watching one of the cams, you never really know what you’re going to find until you crest the dune and lay eyes on it yourself. It's "adventure surfing." The more you monitor the swell, winds, tides, and currents, the more...

Fast Phil
The Mt Baker Legendary Banked Slalom is not traditionally dominated by rail riders. Professional snowboarder Phil Jacques hails from Quebec and has made his mark in snowboarding hitting big handrails in the snow-covered urban north, with goals of being a more balanced all-around rider, a few seasons back Phil started racing in high profile banked slalom events. In a short time, he’s become one of the only riders in the sport to transition from the top of the rail riding game to the podiums of banked slaloms like the Dirksen Derby and The Mt Baker Legendary Banked Slalom.

Go Curiously
Field Report filed by Coal Ambassador JeanMarie Bousquet. Photography by Dave Reilly You know that feeling of excitement and anticipation that happens in the fall, right before the first snowfall? This same sort of feeling grows immensely within me in the spring, just a few months before the fishing season is in full swing. For me, it’s even more of a tease than anxiously awaiting the snow to fall and the lifts to start spinning. It's fishing season that the rest of my year revolves around, and spring is when the anticipation is the most intense. Here in the Rockies, there’s sort...
